Our History
During September 2008, New Hope celebrated its 125th Anniversary as a congregation in the present location. The church was built in 1893 with bricks made on-site at a kiln across the road. It was started as part of a 5-point circuit affiliated with the German Conference of the United Brethren in Christ. For many years, services were held in German in the morning and English in the evening. In 1946 the United Brethren in Christ and Evangelical churches merged to form the Evangelical United Brethren Church. New Hope was outgrowing its facility and Sunday School rooms were added on the north side in 1950. By the mid-1950’s space was once again at a premium, and trustees explored the possibility of expansion. The congregation voted to move ahead with the plans and the addition was constructed in 1962 at the cost of $36,000 The first service was held in the new sanctuary on Sept. 9, 1962. The congregation celebrated the mortgage burning in special worship service on October 3, 1965. In 1968 the EUB and Methodist denominations merged to create the United Methodist Church; New Hope was paired with Hardin UMC in a two point charge. This arrangement continued until 2002 when the congregations voted to separate to better explore ministry opportunities. The church recently completed a facility expansion which added a new sanctuary, classrooms, accessible restrooms, church office, new kitchen and fellowship areas.
